The Pomodoro Technique
Time is money, doing nothing is an expensive choice.
− Aakash Kotiyal
As truly said, “Time is money”, if we waste it now, we have to pay it later. You can get more money but you cannot get more time. Time is the real wealth that most of us don’t use efficiently. It is such a valuable gift we have, which if utilized efficiently and wisely could us achieving whatever we want to achieve in our life. Time is an opportunity, if you would have avail it, you can achieve more than expectations. Wasting such a precious gift can affect our life adversely and no one would want to waste it.
The distractions around us are the main cause that lead us to the wastage of time. Although, the life is not ideal and things don’t happen as expected, but we can use the time wisely. Everyone in this world has some reason to spend time on. Time is always there, it is you who can grab it firmly. If you are determinant on doing something, time is always there to help you out.
Now it depends on you that how you utilize your time. As said, “Excess of everything is bad” means “don’t spend your all time one thing, rather spend equal time on everything”. As the life is not ideal and we cannot freeze the time. But it is also truth that we have much time that don’t need to be stopped. We are the ones who can utilize it effectively and wisely.
I spend hours on playing games and watching videos on YouTube. Even after getting to the bed at night, I watch some videos or random vlogs on YouTube. Before just sleeping, I curse myself for all the wastage of time. I tried to get rid of these habits but failed because the colors of social media were imprinted on my nerves.
I was not familiar with the name “pomodoro technique”, however I have practiced the same activity many times in past. I remember when I was in 1st year of bachalors, I used to do this but it was not fruitful. I tried many times but the result was same. I was thinking it is itself a time waste because the whole mind is distracted into that. But, one month back when it were my exams and I was short on time, I tried this and the result was shocking and out of my expectations. It took me less than one hour to complete one article that usually consumes more than one hour. It was a good experience and the result was pretty good.
I have been thinking for a week that I should complete the 3D Model on which I was working before but could not find the time to do so. The activity became the reason for completion of my model. As my phone was one of the main reason of my distraction and time waste, but I want to counter attack this situation by using the phone in a positive way. This time I used my phone as a stopwatch.
I set the stopwatch on my phone to 25 Minutes and placed it on my study table. But why did I placed the main root of my distraction in front of my eyes. Because I wanted to fight with the main root of my distraction. I started working and the first 25 minutes went pretty good and my 20% of the work was completed. Then I again took my mobile and started scrolling on social media. Alas! I did this for the next 25 minutes and I was on the same level again because the time that I saved through the activity, was wasted on watching random vlogs.
Then I made a decision that gave me a pretty good result. The way I applied this technique for my task, the same way I applied it to my breaks. I set the timer for my breaks during work as well to make them short. The work I was left with had to be done in two straight hours but this time I added the Amal’s tip 2 of productivity, that is, “Estimate time and add deadlines”. I added 25% extra time to my deadline in which I will be using mobile in the short breaks during my work. This time the result was more than my expectations. I completed the whole work in 2.5 straight hours.
My overall experience about this activity was pretty good. It was difficult for me but helpful as well because it saved my time. After doing this activity, I realized how much we are addicted to the phones and how difficult it is to stay away from it. However, we can use the technology in a better way as well as I did. So, we can say that it is not impossible to control the overuse of phone or anything that distracts you. There is need of one thing, that is, “PRACTICE”. At start, there might be some hurdles doing that, but they practice can make the path smoother. Even my first attempt resulted more than my expectations.
Now I have decided that I will practice this activity once every day to make me more comfortable with that. I am sure that continuing this activity will help me to save my time. I used my phone in a positive way, however there are still some distractions that I am facing. I am still working on it and I will try to reduce them. It is well explained in the following picture that I want to achieve, that is, to run faster than the time I have.
